What is Secalot?
Secalot - This is an all-in-one hardware wallet designed to ensure the security of crypto funds and confidential user data. Secalot is an open source platform, available in both software and hardware.
The wallet can be used to store various cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, and all tokens based on the ERC20 standard.
All applications found on the hardware wallet are compatible with computers running the following systems: Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. Mobile users can access their wallet through the Secalot mobile app, which is available for both Android and iOS devices.
You can pay for your wallet using bitcoins, credit cards and Paypal.
The Secalot wallet has the appearance of a 60x15x10 mm USB stick and a USB-A plug. Two silver stripes are printed on the front and back, on the sides you can find two touch buttons.
How to setup
Depending on which wallet you need, you will need to make various settings.
1. Installing Bitcoin Wallet
For Bitcoin, you will need to install a modified version of the Wallet Electrum software.
- Download it from the Secalot download area.
- Start initialization by opening File> New Wallet.
- Choose a name for your bitcoin wallet.
- In the next window, select the type of wallet.
- Now select that the seed should be generated through the hardware wallet.
- The actual installation process will begin at this point. Enter the PIN, and a sealed seed will be generated on the device. A backup of this seed is a 24-word mnemonic.
2. Configure Ethereum Wallet
To set up an Ethereum wallet, you need to use the MyEtherWallet web wallet, where you can configure it via the “Secalot control panel GUI”.
- Download the app from the Secalot download area.
- Windows application starts without installation by directly opening the Ethereum tab.
- Select a PIN and record the initial recovery number that will be generated.
Secalot security features
Secalot Remote Screen
The Secalot remote screen allows users to view the details of their transactions using the Secalot mobile app. All data between the wallet and the mobile device is sent over a secure SSL / TLS channel. This channel ensures that private keys always remain on the device.
Universal second factor (U2F)
You can register your device to use other services as the second secure factor that must be connected at login. You will need to press the U2F touch button located at the top of the device, if necessary.
Secalot supports simultaneous registration of a large number of websites. The following services are currently supported: Google, Facebook, Dropbox, GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, and Nextcloud.
OpenPGP Smart Card
Secalot has a built-in smart card function that performs various cryptographic operations. This allows you to integrate various existing programs through GnuPG or the PKCS # 11 interface.
The following actions can be performed:
- Login to Linux computer
- Hard Drive Encryption with TrueCrypt
- Encrypting and signing files
- Email Encryption and Signing
- VPN and SSH connections through Secalot
One-Time Password Generator (OTP)
OTPs allow you to safely access websites and applications, acting as an additional secure factor, such as U2F. This type of authentication is similar to what the Google Authenticator application does, but instead of the application you use the Secalot Stick.
One-time password is generated by pressing both keys. The graphical user interface of the Secalot control panel allows you to add new services. Since some OTPs require a current date, the service must be open in the background.
Secure data storage
A secure microcontroller performs cryptographic operations that securely store sensitive user data.
Secalot firmware can be easily updated, allowing its development team to frequently release bug fixes and add advanced features.
Documentation and support
Secalot has an English documentation area that explains its functions in detail. The documentation section is available on the official product home page. Clients can contact customer support only by sending a contact form.
Secalot wallet can be purchased for 50 euros (56.56 US dollars).
Although it has a wide list of security features, Secalot is still a new product, and there may still be some bugs in it, but otherwise it looks like a reliable hardware wallet.
